What exactly is mental health coaching and consulting?

Mental health coaching and consulting is a structured, practical form of support designed for family members — not the person in treatment. I help you understand what your loved one is going through, navigate the mental health system, set healthy boundaries, and develop strategies for showing up effectively without burning out. It's action-oriented, goal-focused, and grounded in compassion.

How is this different from therapy?

Therapy is a clinical service provided by licensed mental health professionals — it diagnoses, treats, and addresses the psychological needs of the individual patient. Coaching and consulting is not therapy. I work with you, the family member, to help you navigate your loved one's journey more effectively. I don't diagnose, treat, or provide clinical care. Think of me as a knowledgeable guide who helps you understand the system and show up with more confidence and clarity.

Do you work with the person who is struggling, or with the family?

I work exclusively with family members — parents, spouses, siblings, adult children, and caregivers who are supporting someone they love. My focus is on equipping you with the tools, language, and strategies to be the best possible support for your loved one while also taking care of yourself.

Is this a replacement for my loved one's treatment team?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely not — and I want to be clear about that. My services are designed to complement, not replace, professional clinical care. I work alongside your loved one's therapists, psychiatrists, and care team. My role is to support you so you can support them more effectively.

How do I know if this is right for my family?

If you feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure how to help your loved one — this is for you. If you've ever felt lost in a diagnosis, frustrated by the mental health system, or exhausted from trying to figure it all out alone — this is for you. The free consultation is the best way to find out. We'll talk through your situation and I'll be honest with you about whether I think I can help.

What happens during the free consultation?

The free 30-minute consultation is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation. I'll ask about your family's situation, what you're struggling with most, and what you're hoping to get out of coaching. You'll have the chance to ask me anything. At the end, we'll both have a sense of whether working together makes sense — and there's no obligation either way.

How quickly can I get started?

After your free consultation, we can typically begin sessions within the same week. I keep my schedule flexible to accommodate families who need support sooner rather than later.

How are sessions conducted?

All sessions are conducted virtually via secure, confidential video call. This makes it easy to access support from wherever you are — whether you're at home, at work, or anywhere in between. You'll receive a private link before each session.

How long are sessions and how often do we meet?

Standard sessions are 30 minutes. Most families meet weekly or bi-weekly, depending on their needs and schedule. We'll discuss the right cadence during your free consultation and adjust as we go.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Accepted Answer

Life happens — especially when you're supporting someone with mental health challenges. I ask for at least 24 hours notice for cancellations or reschedules whenever possible. I'll always do my best to find a time that works for you.

Is everything I share kept confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in our sessions is held in strict confidence. I take your privacy seriously and use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform for all sessions.

What if my family is in a crisis right now?

Accepted Answer

If your loved one is in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. For mental health crisis lines, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) is available 24/7. Once the immediate situation is stabilized, I'm here to help your family process what happened and build a plan for moving forward.

Can you help us prepare for a potential crisis before it happens?

Yes — and this is one of the most valuable things we can do together. Crisis preparation and safety planning is a core part of my Crisis Support Consulting service. Having a clear plan before a crisis occurs can make an enormous difference in how your family responds when things get difficult.
